Matching Movements to Thoughts
Whenever I begin working with a new client, there's a little movement and a lot of talking. Why? Seems strange right? I am a trainer, after all, movement is what I do, weight loss, muscle development, etc.
Yes, you are correct in this thinking, however, think about the way you walk and talk, are these choices? Yes, and no. More than likely they are result of patterns, physiological results of sociological behaviors. Yep! That nasty word, "habit".
It's ok. We all have them.
As a Behavioral Change Specialist, it is my job to help my clients identify their own dysfunction, eating patterns or muscle misuse, and how each aspect of dysfunction effects the other, and how these patterns, or habits, effect how we approach life in general.
So here's an example: a young woman, she walks with her shoulders hunched forward and her and her hips pre-empt her steps in a posterior pelvic tilt (she pushes her hips forward as she walks).
As we speak, I begin to identify the reasons for the afore mentioned dysfunction. Perhaps she was taller than average and did not want to be noticed so she hunched her shoulders over, and perhaps she felt self conscious about her body growing up and did not want to draw too much attention in this way either, so she tightened her hips rather than allowing them to sway side to side.
As we slowly begin to make adjustments in her body and movement patterns, a really cool thing happens, it also changes her perspective, and her interactions in her life.
You see, how we move speaks to how we feel about ourselves, and by carefully, with the help of pro, re-learning movement patterns, we begin to open ourselves to changing other patterns. If our walk exudes confidence, that is how people will treat us, and that is more than likely how we will perceive ourselves.
So think about what you do, how and why you do it. Ask me questions, challenge me, I am here to help you be better.
My father once said, "Any habit is bad", in other words, anything we say or do which is not a conscious thought is harmful. He is right. Understanding how our thoughts play into our actions and then effect our body's functionality gives us the power to make positive changes.
