25/75 What you wear vs. How you wear it.
I remember when I was a young girl, my Baba (grandmother in Yiddish), wore a beautiful pave diamond faced Rolex watch. My Zeda liked to enjoy life, however, he was not extravagant. He was a member of the old world Jewry, who built themselves from very little. The city streets, to success. He was an engineer who ran a contracting business. My point is, although he certainly could have purchased this watch, they generally start around 20k or so, it seemed quite out of character.
One day I asked my Baba about the watch, where they bought etc. She smiled and whispered, "it's not real! New York Street sale, $30- everyone thinks it's real because I'm Mrs. Altman"- meaning my grandfather was a well-to-do man, he could afford a real rolex for his wife, only she was thrifty enough to save the $19,970 and allow people to think what they will.
I always remembered this, particularly as I am a thrifty shopper myself. My favorite haunts have always been Buffalo Exchange in New York and Avalon here in St. Louis. I enjoy putting things together, mix matching, and I'm usually dressed for right around $20. Always inspired by urban sheek, athletic-come-day-come-evening wear.
So when me and my supergirl side-kick Sophie, set out to create a cool new fashion line for Jewish Women via Train Your Inner Warrior, she being a woman after my own heart in the game of funky fashion puzzles, decided that was the route we wanted to take. How to mix- match pieces, recreate them and make something that would fit the individual circa Meatpacking-district-haute-boutique, at a fraction of the cost, and like my Baba's Rolex, let onlookers believe what the will.
Stay tuned for our unveiling, the first pieces will be available before fall online. Meantime, you can catch Sophie and me hot on the trail of funky colors, cool textures, and ideas Jewish Women can use in the gym or Shul on Saturday morning.
Lots of Love,
Anna
